Depressed malarial immunity in pregnant mice.

چکیده
A proportion of mice solidly immune to the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei exhibited a pregnancy-associated depressed immunity with a transient or even lethal recrudescence.

The use of anti-malarial drugs to prevent malaria in the population of malaria-endemic areas.
Anti-malarial drugs have been used in various ways to prevent malaria in the resident populations of endemic areas for nearly 100 years. The primary aim of most early studies was to interrupt transmission. This was rarely achieved, but administration of anti-malarial drugs either through medication of salt or by mass administration frequently led to a marked reduction in the prevalence of malar...
متن کاملT-cell immunity in murine malaria: adoptive transfer of resistance to Plasmodium chabaudi adami in nude mice with splenic T cells.
Acute infections caused by the murine malarial parasite Plasmodium chabaudi adami are resolved by antibody-independent mechanisms of immunity. The fact that athymic nude mice developed high-grade unrelenting malaria and died when infected with this parasite suggested a significant role for T lymphocytes. Using adoptive transfer techniques, we demonstrated that spleen cells from either nonimmune...
متن کاملCell- rather than antibody-mediated immunity leads to the development of profound thrombocytopenia during experimental Plasmodium berghei malaria.
Experimental malarial thrombocytopenia can reach life-threatening levels and is believed to be due to Abs targeting platelets for destruction by the reticuloendothelial system. However, we report that Abs account for at most 15% of platelet destruction as Plasmodium berghei-infected B cell-deficient mice exhibited profound thrombocytopenia (83%) as did C57BL/6 controls (98%). Further, no signif...
متن کاملComplement contributes to protective immunity against reinfection by Plasmodium chabaudi chabaudi parasites.
We have studied the impact of deficiency of the complement system on the progression and control of the erythrocyte stages of the malarial parasite Plasmodium chabaudi chabaudi. C1q-deficient mice and factor B- and C2-deficient mice, deficient in the classical complement pathway and in both the alternative and classical complement activation pathways, respectively, exhibited only a slight delay...
متن کاملUse of a two-sited monoclonal antibody assay to detect a heat-stable malarial antigen in the sera of mice infected with Plasmodium yoelii.
Antigens, circulating in the blood during malarial infections, have been implicated in immune protection, immunosuppression, and immune-complex formation. We used a monoclonal antibody (MAb 7H8) to identify an antigen (Ag-7H8) in the sera of mice infected with Plasmodium yoelii. The major form of the antigen has a molecular weight of approximately 120,000 in P. yoelii, with minor components of ...
